Popular Pet Snake Lifespans
Captive lifespans for common pet snakes: Corn Snake 15-20 years (some reach 23+ years). Ball Python / Royal Python 20-30 years — the most commonly kept pet snake in the UK, ball pythons are known for extremely long captive lives with proper care. King Snake and Milk Snake 15-25 years. Boa Constrictor 20-30+ years. These are significantly longer than wild lifespans due to regular feeding, veterinary care, and absence of predators. A ball python purchased as a hatchling is genuinely a lifetime com
Feeding and Nutrition
All popular pet snakes are obligate carnivores fed pre-killed or frozen-thawed prey. Frozen-thawed prey is strongly recommended over live feeding: it is safer for the snake (live prey can injure snakes, especially during digestion), easier for the keeper, and is considered more humane. Thaw prey in the fridge overnight and warm to 35-40°C before offering (warm prey triggers the feeding response). Feeding frequency: hatchlings every 5-7 days. Juveniles every 7-10 days. Adults every 10-14 days. Ba
Shedding (Ecdysis)
Snakes shed their entire skin periodically as they grow and to remove parasites. Signs of an impending shed (pre-ecdysis): eyes become milky blue (fluid between old and new skin), scale pattern appears duller, snake becomes more reclusive and may refuse food — do not handle during blue phase. The actual shed takes 30-60 minutes for most snakes. After shedding: check that the eye caps have shed completely (retained eye caps require veterinary attention) and that the shed is in one complete piece
Common Health Issues
Respiratory infection: wheezing, mucus, open-mouth breathing — usually caused by temperature drops below the minimum for the species. Requires veterinary treatment with antibiotics and temperature correction. Stuck shed (dysecdysis): retained skin, particularly around the eyes and tail tip — soak in warm water and gently remove with damp cloth. Caused by insufficient humidity. Inclusion body disease (IBD) in boid snakes (pythons, boas): a viral disease causing neurological symptoms, usually fata
