Goldfish Tank Size Calculator
Calculate the correct tank size for your goldfish — one of the most misunderstood pets in the UK. The fish-bowl myth costs goldfish their health and severely shortens their lives.
Goldfish Care Guide
Why Goldfish Need Large Tanks
The goldfish bowl myth is one of the most damaging misconceptions in pet keeping. Goldfish produce enormous amounts of ammonia waste relative to their size — far more than tropical fish. In small bowls: ammonia and nitrite build up to toxic levels within days, causing permanent gill and organ damage. Goldfish grow continuously throughout their lives — common goldfish reach 25-30cm, comet goldfish 30-40cm. A stunted goldfish is not healthy; stunting is caused by toxic water and poor conditions, n
Minimum Tank Sizes
UK recommended minimum tank sizes: Fancy goldfish (oranda, ryukin, fantail): 80-100 litres for the first fish, plus 40-50 litres per additional fish — so 2 fancy goldfish require minimum 120-150 litres. Common/comet goldfish: 150+ litres for the first fish, plus 50-60 litres each — 2 comets require 200+ litres. Single-tail (slim) fancy: similar to common. Most garden ponds: ideal for common goldfish — minimum 1,000 litres for 4-6 fish. Goldfish should never be kept in bowls, 20-30 litre starter
Filtration for Goldfish
Goldfish require filtration rated for 6-10× the tank volume per hour (much higher than tropical fish) due to their heavy waste production. A 150-litre goldfish tank needs a filter producing 900-1500 litres per hour. External canister filters (Fluval, Eheim) provide better biological filtration than internal filters. The biological filter (beneficial bacteria in the filter media) converts toxic ammonia to less-harmful nitrate. This takes 4-8 weeks to establish (the nitrogen cycle) — never add gol
Common Goldfish Health Problems
White spot (Ich): white spots on body and fins, causes fish to flash (rub on objects). Treat with aquarium-safe copper treatment at first sign. Swim bladder disorder: fish floating sideways or sinking — common in round-bodied fancy varieties due to their compressed body shape. Often related to constipation (feed blanched peas) or bacterial infection. Fin rot: fraying, discoloured fin edges — caused by poor water quality. Improve water quality first, treat with appropriate anti-bacterial treatmen
