Pet Bird Care Guide
Bird Lifespans by Species
Lifespans vary enormously between species. Budgerigars: 5–10 years (wild birds 4–6 years). Canaries and finches: 5–15 years. Cockatiels: 15–20 years. Lovebirds: 10–15 years. Conures: 15–30 years depending on species. African Grey Parrots: 40–60+ years — some live to 80. Amazon Parrots: 40–70 years. Macaws: 40–80 years. Blue-and-yellow Macaw has been recorded over 100 years. This is why acquiring a large parrot is a major long-term commitment — they may outlive their owners.
Budgerigar Health and Aging
Budgies are the UK's most popular pet bird. Young budgies (under 1 year) have stripy bar markings extending to the forehead; these clear on adult birds. Healthy weight: 30–35g. Common health issues: tumours (very common in older budgies, particularly females — fatty tumours, testicular tumours), mites, and respiratory issues. Regular handling and interaction reveals health problems early. Budgies hide illness well — by the time symptoms are obvious, they may be seriously unwell. Bi-annual vet ch
Parrots and Long-Term Commitment
Large parrots (African Greys, Amazons, Macaws) require a level of commitment comparable to a dog or more — daily interaction, mental stimulation, large enclosures, varied diet, and regular veterinary care. Parrots are highly intelligent and can develop severe psychological problems (feather plucking, self-mutilation, aggression) if under-stimulated or improperly socialised. They bond strongly to their owners and can suffer profound grief when owners die or relationships change. Rescue organisati
Diet for Pet Birds
Seed-only diets are the most common cause of nutritional deficiency in pet birds — particularly dangerous for parrots and cockatiels. Seeds are high in fat and low in vitamins A, D3, and calcium. A complete diet: high-quality pellets (50–70% of diet for most species), fresh vegetables (leafy greens, carrots, peppers, courgette), small amounts of fruit, and some seed as a treat. Toxic foods: avocado (potentially fatal), chocolate, caffeine, onions, garlic, apple seeds, and anything containing xyl
