Hamster & Small Pet Age Calculator
Small pets age very differently from dogs and cats. Convert your hamster, gerbil, rabbit, or guinea pig's age to the human equivalent and understand their life stage.
Rapid Ageing in Small Mammals
Hamsters live 2–3 years on average, meaning each month is equivalent to several human years. A 2-year-old Syrian hamster is at the equivalent of approximately 70+ human years. Signs of ageing appear at 12–18 months: reduced activity, coat changes, possible weight loss.
Senior Care
Senior hamsters need: softer bedding, lower cage levels to reduce fall risk, easily accessible food and water, softer foods, and more frequent health checks. Tumours are common in older hamsters — weekly handling lets you spot lumps early.
Rabbit Lifespan Variation
Rabbits are widely misunderstood as short-lived pets. With proper care (vet-checked diet, indoor/outdoor housing, annual vaccinations, neutering), many rabbits live 8–12 years. Neutered rabbits live significantly longer than unneutered ones and are at reduced risk of reproductive cancers.
Preventive Veterinary Care
Regular preventive veterinary care reduces long-term costs and improves pet health outcomes. Annual vaccinations (dogs and cats) protect against serious diseases. Regular flea, tick, and worm treatments prevent infestations and parasite-borne diseases. Annual dental checks — dental disease affects over 80% of dogs and cats over 3 years old and causes chronic pain that is often undetected. Microchipping is compulsory for dogs in England and recommended for cats. Pet insurance taken out when pets
