Dog Food Portion Calculator
Over 50% of dogs are overweight. Feeding the right amount for your dog's weight and activity level is the single most impactful thing you can do for their long-term health.
The % Body Weight Rule
Adult dogs typically need 2–3% of their body weight daily in food. Puppies need 4–6%. Active dogs and working breeds need the higher end; senior and sedentary dogs the lower end. Always adjust based on body condition score, not just weight.
Body Condition Score
Feel your dog's ribs — you should be able to feel them easily without pressing hard, but not see them. If you can see ribs, they're underweight. If you can't feel them, they're overweight. This hands-on check is more accurate than any formula.
Always Follow Pack Guidelines
This calculator gives a starting point — always cross-reference with the manufacturer's guidelines on your specific food, as caloric density varies significantly. Adjust portions every 4–6 weeks based on your dog's body condition.
Preventive Veterinary Care
Regular preventive veterinary care reduces long-term costs and improves pet health outcomes. Annual vaccinations (dogs and cats) protect against serious diseases. Regular flea, tick, and worm treatments prevent infestations and parasite-borne diseases. Annual dental checks — dental disease affects over 80% of dogs and cats over 3 years old and causes chronic pain that is often undetected. Microchipping is compulsory for dogs in England and recommended for cats. Pet insurance taken out when pets
