Cat to Human Age Conversion

The International Cat Care and American Association of Feline Practitioners use a recognised conversion: 1 year old = 15 human years (rapid development). 2 years old = 24 human years. Each subsequent year adds approximately 4 human years. So a 10-year-old cat is roughly 56, and a 15-year-old cat is approximately 76. Indoor cats consistently live 2–5 years longer than outdoor cats on average.

Life Stages (AAFP Classification)

Kitten (0–6 months): rapid growth, vaccination schedule, socialisation window, desexing decision. Junior (7 months–2 years): reaching full size and social maturity. Prime (3–6 years): peak health, lowest veterinary needs. Mature (7–10 years): equivalent to mid-40s to mid-50s human — health monitoring increases. Senior (11–14 years): regular bloodwork recommended. Geriatric (15+ years): bi-annual vet visits, management of chronic conditions.

Common Health Issues by Age

Under 3 years: upper respiratory infections, FIV/FeLV exposure (outdoor cats), trauma. Prime adults: dental disease (affects 70% of cats over 3), obesity, hyperthyroidism emerging. Senior cats: chronic kidney disease (the leading cause of death in senior cats), hyperthyroidism, dental disease, arthritis, and hypertension. Annual bloodwork from age 8 allows early detection of kidney disease when dietary management is most effective.

Extending Quality of Life

Keeping cats indoors removes the leading causes of early death (road accidents, infectious disease, predation). Maintaining a healthy weight is the single most evidence-backed intervention for longevity in cats. Dental disease is severely underestimated — tooth resorption and gum disease cause chronic pain that cats mask. Regular dental checks and professional cleaning under anaesthetic from around age 3 make a significant difference to quality and length of life.
