Dog Exercise Guide
Why Exercise Matters
Exercise is essential for a dog's physical and mental health. Benefits: physical health (weight management, joint and muscle health, cardiovascular fitness). Mental health (reduces boredom, anxiety, destructive behaviour). Behaviour (a tired dog is a well-behaved dog — under-exercised dogs often chew, bark, dig, and develop problem behaviours). Bonding (shared activity strengthens your relationship). Socialisation (meeting other dogs and people). Under-exercised dogs commonly show: destructive c
Exercise by Breed Type
Working/herding breeds (Border Collie, Husky, Belgian Malinois): 2+ hours daily. High intensity. These dogs were bred to work all day — they need substantial physical AND mental exercise. Under-stimulation causes serious behavioural problems. Sporting/gundog breeds (Labrador, Retriever, Spaniel): 1.5-2 hours daily. Love retrieving, swimming, running. Terriers (Jack Russell, Staffie): 1-2 hours. High energy in a small package. Need vigorous activity. Hounds (Beagle, Greyhound): variable. Beagles
Age Matters
Puppies: the '5-minute rule' is a common guideline — 5 minutes of structured exercise per month of age, twice daily. A 4-month puppy: ~20 minutes twice daily. This protects developing joints and growth plates. Over-exercising puppies (especially large breeds) can cause permanent joint damage. Free play and pottering is fine; forced/repetitive exercise (long runs, jumping, stairs) should be limited until growth plates close (12-18 months, later for giant breeds). Adult dogs: full exercise per the

Training sessions (learning new commands/tricks). Scent work and games (hide treats). Chew toys (appropriate for the dog). A mentally tired dog is calmer than one that's only physically tired. Combine both for best results. Safety warnings: heat — never exercise dogs in hot weather (especially flat-faced breeds). Walk early morning or evenin
