Tortoise Care Guide
Mediterranean vs Tropical Species
Mediterranean tortoises (Hermann's, Spur-thighed, Horsfield's, Marginated): hibernate naturally in their range. Require cool dry climate or careful management in UK. Diet: high-fibre weeds and flowers. Tropical species (Sulcata, Leopard, Red-foot): DO NOT hibernate. Larger species — Sulcata reaches 50+kg. Higher temperature requirements. Often outgrow owners. Choosing the right species: Hermann's and Horsfield's are most beginner-friendly. Most common pet species in UK. Smaller size (max ~20cm).
Enclosure Requirements
Minimum sizes for adult tortoises: Mediterranean species: indoor tortoise table 2.5m × 1m minimum (NOT vivarium — too humid). Outdoor: 4m × 2m enclosed minimum. Larger always better. Sulcata: adults need heated greenhouse or stable. Indoor unsuitable past 30cm shell length. Leopard: similar — outdoor heated accommodation. Substrate: topsoil + play sand mix (60:40) for digging behaviour. Avoid wood chip (eye injury) and calcium sand (impaction risk). UV exposure: critical for vitamin D3 synthesis
Hibernation (Mediterranean Species Only)
Hibernation is essential for Mediterranean tortoise health long-term. Healthy tortoises in 3rd autumn onwards: hibernate 12-16 weeks (Hermann's), 8-12 weeks (Horsfield's). NEVER hibernate: sick or underweight tortoises. Tortoises under 2 years (or 100g for Hermann's). Tropical species (Sulcata, Leopard, Red-foot). The Jackson Ratio: predicts hibernation safety. Weight (g) / shell length (cm)³ × 1000. Hermann's healthy ratio: 0.21-0.23. Below 0.18: too thin to hibernate safely. Above 0.24: overwe
Diet and Common Mistakes
Mediterranean tortoise diet: high-fibre flowering weeds and plants. NO supermarket vegetables long-term (too soft, low fibre, wrong calcium:phosphorus ratio). Excellent foods: dandelion, plantain, sow thistle, hibiscus flowers, mulberry leaves, hawkweeds, clover. Limited: spring greens, watercress. AVOID: lettuce (no nutrition), cucumber (causes diarrhoea), fruit (causes flagellate parasites and gut imbalance). Calcium supplement: dust food with calcium powder daily. Cuttlefish bone always avail
