Calculating Dog Calorie Needs
Resting Energy Requirement (RER): RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. This is the energy needed at rest. Daily Energy Requirement (DER) = RER × multiplier. Multipliers by life stage and activity: neutered adult, inactive: 1.4. Neutered adult, moderate: 1.6. Intact adult, moderate: 1.8. Active adult: 2.0-2.5. Working dog: 2.5-4.0. Puppy (3-4 months): 3.0. Puppy (> 4 months): 2.5. Pregnant (last trimester): 3.0. These are starting points — adjust based on body condition score over 4-6 weeks.
Body Condition Scoring
The body condition score (BCS) is the most reliable guide to whether your dog is the right weight. The BCS scale (1-9): 1-3: underweight — ribs, spine, and hip bones visible from a distance. 4-5: ideal — ribs easily felt but not visible, waist visible from above, abdominal tuck from the side. 6-7: overweight — ribs hard to feel under fat cover, waist barely visible. 8-9: obese — fat deposits on neck, limbs, back; ribs cannot be felt. In the UK, over 50% of dogs are estimated to be overweight or
Reading Dog Food Labels
The calorie content (metabolisable energy, ME) must be stated on UK pet food labels as kcal/kg. Divide by 10 for kcal per 100g. Typical dry food (kibble): 300-400 kcal/100g. Wet food (pouches/tins): 70-120 kcal/100g. Raw food: 100-200 kcal/100g. Wet food has much higher water content — portions by weight are much larger for the same calories. Feeding guides on packaging are starting points only, often generous (manufacturers' commercial interest). Always adjust based on body condition, not just
How to Measure Food Accurately
Use a kitchen scale, not cups or scoops — the same cup of kibble can vary by 20-40% depending on how full or how fine the kibble is. Weigh the daily allowance in the morning, split into 2-3 meals. Treats count: if treats account for 10% of daily intake, reduce meals by 10% accordingly. Training treats: use the dog's own kibble as training rewards where possible — no extra calories. Puzzle feeders and slow bowls extend meal duration and provide mental stimulation, particularly important for dogs
