Garden Area Calculator
Calculate the total area of your garden or any outdoor space. Add multiple sections of different shapes for accurate fertiliser, seed, membrane, or aggregate quantities.
Garden Measurement Guide
Measuring Irregular Shapes
Divide irregular areas into overlapping rectangles, triangles, and circles. A typical garden might be: main lawn rectangle, minus a circular flower bed, plus a triangular corner border. Calculate each section and add or subtract as appropriate.
Why Accurate Area Matters
Lawn products (seed, fertiliser, treatments) are dosed per m² — incorrect area wastes money or causes patchy results. Topsoil and compost quantities are calculated per m² and depth. Aggregate and membrane quantities require accurate area to avoid under or over-ordering.
Rope Technique for Curves
For curved garden edges, lay a length of rope along the boundary, then straighten it out and measure. This gives the perimeter length accurately. For area, photograph the garden from above and divide into measurable shapes.
Energy Efficiency Priorities
Home energy improvements should be prioritised by payback period. Quickest payback: draught proofing (£50-200 cost, saves £60-100/year — under 2 years). Loft insulation (£300-500 DIY, saves £150-200/year — 2-3 years). Switching to LED lighting (under £100, saves £40-60/year — under 2 years). Longer payback: cavity wall insulation (3-5 years). New efficient boiler (5-10 years). Solar panels (7-15 years). Heat pump (10-25 years at current energy prices). For homes eligible for ECO4 funding, the pa
