Hamster Welfare Guide

Why Cage Size Matters

Hamsters in the wild roam 8-12 km per night. In captivity, stereotypic behaviours (repetitive, purposeless movements — constant bar chewing, repeated circling) are the most reliable sign of chronic stress and inadequate housing. The single biggest cause of hamster stereotypy: inadequate cage size. Many pet shop cages are far too small — the hamster cannot run, dig, or forage adequately. German welfare guidelines (widely referenced internationally): minimum 800 cm² floor space for Syrian hamsters

Minimum Size Guidelines

Syrian hamster: absolute minimum (welfare organisations): 4,000 cm² floor space. Recommended: 6,000-8,000 cm²+. A 100×60cm base is a good starting point. Roborovski dwarf: minimum 3,500 cm². Despite being small, they are extremely active. Russian/Campbell dwarf: minimum 3,500-4,000 cm². Chinese dwarf: similar to other dwarfs — 3,500+ cm². Height: hamsters dig, not climb. Taller cages are valuable for bedding depth, not for vertical space. 40cm height enables 20-25cm deep bedding with headroom ab

Essential Equipment

Wheel: the most important enrichment item. Minimum diameter: Syrian 28-30cm. Dwarf 20-25cm. Anything smaller causes spinal arching — linked to injury and discomfort. Solid surface (not rungs or mesh). Silent wheel (Silent Runner, Niteangel) is strongly preferred. Avoid plastic wheels from pet shops that are too small — usually sold as 'suitable for Syrian' but are 18-21cm. Food: muesli-style mix with seed, grain, and dried veg. Not pure seed (nutritionally incomplete). Fresh vegetables in small

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Wire cage with wire floor: hamsters walk on cage floors — wire mesh causes foot injuries and bumblefoot. Solid plastic or glass base only. Wire tops: fine. Bar spacing: Syrian hamsters: maximum 1cm between bars. Dwarf hamsters: 0.7cm maximum (dwarfs escape through standard spacing). Tank enclosures (glass or PVC): excellent for bedding depth and prevents bar chewing. Good ventilation essential to prevent ammonia buildup. Alone: Syrian hamsters are strictly solitary — housing two together results
