The Viewing Angle Formula
THX recommends a viewing angle of 40° for cinematic immersion. SMPTE recommends 30° for general viewing. Ideal TV size = 2 × viewing distance × tan(angle/2). For a 3m distance and 30° angle: size = 2 × 3 × tan(15°) = 2 × 3 × 0.268 = 1.61m = 63 inches. For cinematic 40°: = 2 × 3 × tan(20°) = 2.19m = 86 inches. Most people's living rooms suggest 55-75 inch TVs for typical 2.5-3.5m viewing distances, which is why the market has shifted dramatically toward larger screens.
Resolution and Viewing Distance
The resolution benefit depends on how close you sit. At 4K, the human eye can distinguish individual pixels up to a viewing distance of approximately TV_size (inches) × 1.5 / 39.37 metres. For a 55-inch 4K TV: maximum benefit distance ≈ 55 × 1.5 / 39.37 ≈ 2.1m. Sitting further than this, 4K offers no perceivable advantage over 1080p. The centre of the TV screen should be at seated eye level — typically 100-110cm from the floor when seated. The common mistake: mounting the TV too high (above a fireplace, for example) causes neck strain during extended viewing.
