Steps and Health

How Calories per Step are Calculated

Calories per step = body weight (kg) × 0.00005 × pace multiplier. A 70kg person walking briskly burns approximately 0.04–0.05 kcal per step. 10,000 steps at moderate pace burns around 350–400 kcal for a 70kg person.

The 10,000 Step Myth

The 10,000 step target originated from a Japanese pedometer marketing campaign in the 1960s, not scientific research. More recent research suggests 7,000–8,000 steps/day is associated with significantly reduced mortality risk, with diminishing returns above that level.

NEAT — Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

Daily steps are a major component of NEAT — the calories burned through non-structured movement. People with high NEAT can burn 500–1000 more calories per day than sedentary individuals with the same workout routine. Incidental walking (stairs, walking meetings) adds up significantly.
