BMI and Ideal Weight Guide

What is BMI Prime?

BMI Prime is BMI divided by 25 (the upper limit of the normal range). A BMI Prime of 1.0 means your BMI is exactly 25 — the top of the normal range. Below 0.74 is underweight, 0.74–1.0 is normal weight, 1.0–1.2 is overweight, above 1.2 is obese. BMI Prime makes comparisons simpler: a value of 1.5 means your BMI is 50% above the upper normal limit. It was developed to give a more intuitive measure than the raw BMI number.

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle. A muscular athlete may have a BMI in the 'overweight' range with very low body fat. Conversely, someone with a normal BMI but high abdominal fat (so-called 'skinny fat') may have elevated metabolic risk. BMI is also less accurate at the extremes of height — it systematically underestimates obesity risk in shorter people and overestimates it in very tall people. For children and teenagers, age and sex-specific BMI-for-age charts are used.

Healthy Weight Range

The healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) corresponds to different absolute weights depending on height. For a 5ft 6in (168cm) person, healthy weight is approximately 52–70kg. For a 5ft 10in (178cm) person: 59–79kg. For a 6ft (183cm) person: 62–83kg. Frame size adjusts these slightly — people with larger frames (wider wrists, broader shoulders) can carry slightly more weight within a healthy body composition. These are population-level guidelines — individual variation matters.

BMI Thresholds for South Asian populations

NHS guidance notes that people of South Asian, Chinese, and other Asian backgrounds have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMI levels than White European populations. NHS thresholds for action are set lower: overweight is BMI 23+ (vs 25 in European populations), and intervention thresholds for health programmes are similarly adjusted downward. If you are of South Asian or Chinese heritage, discuss weight health with your GP using these adjusted thresholds.
