Physics of the Jump

Vertical jump height from flight time: h = g × t²/8, where g = 9.81 m/s² and t is total flight time (not half). This follows from the free-fall equations — the time to rise equals the time to fall, and height = ½g(t/2)². A flight time of 0.58 seconds gives h = 9.81 × 0.58² / 8 = 0.41m = 41cm. Simple apps that use the phone's accelerometer can measure flight time accurately when the phone is held still in both hands.

Average adult male vertical jump: 45–55cm. Average adult female: 35–45cm. Recreational basketball player: 55–65cm male, 45–55cm female. Improving Vertical Jump

Plyometric training is the most effective method for improving vertical jump — specifically depth jumps, box jumps, and jump squats. Maximum strength training (squats and deadlifts to 1–1.5× bodyweight) provides the force production base. Sprint training improves rate of force development. Measuring Jump Height

Most accurate method: force plate measurement in a sports lab (measures ground reaction force and calculates jump height precisely). Good home methods: Vertec (adjustable vanes to hit at peak of jump), chalk on hand touching a wall, or a jump mat that measures air time. Phone apps using accelerometer can be reasonably accurate (±2–5cm). The standing reach + jump reach chalk method (measuring the difference) is widely used for sports combine testing — simple but dependent on accurate chalk marking.
