The 30 Free Hours Expansion (April 2024-2025)
The biggest UK childcare reform in a generation rolled out in stages: April 2024 — 15 free hours for 2-year-olds of working parents. September 2024 — 15 free hours for under-2s (9-month-olds and above). September 2025 — 30 free hours for under-5s of working parents. Tax-Free Childcare
The Tax-Free Childcare scheme (since 2017) provides government top-ups for eligible families. For every £8 you pay into a Childcare account, the government adds £2 — up to £2,000 per child per year (£4,000 for disabled children). Eligibility: both parents working, neither earning over £100,000 individually, child under 12 (or 17 if disabled). Universal Credit Childcare Support
Universal Credit can cover up to 85% of eligible childcare costs for working parents. Maximum (2026/27): £1,014.63/month for 1 child; £1,739.37/month for 2+ children.
