Time Factors

A professional tiler covers 10–15m² per day on standard wall tiles in a simple layout. A competent DIYer might manage 5–8m². Large format tiles (60×60+) take longer per tile to set, cut, and level — especially on floors where lippage must be controlled.

Drying Times

Standard tile adhesive takes 24 hours before grouting. Rapid-set takes 3–4 hours. Grout dries in 24 hours before light use, 72 hours before heavy cleaning. Allow at least 28 days before grouting epoxy-based systems. Budget drying times into your project schedule.

First Timer Tips

Spend twice as long on preparation as you think necessary — a perfectly flat, primed surface makes every subsequent step easier. Dry-lay the full floor before adhesive to plan cuts and check the pattern. Mix grout in small batches and work in 1m² sections to prevent it drying in the bucket.

Safety and Regulations

Most structural and electrical DIY work in England and Wales must comply with Building Regulations and is notifiable to local Building Control. Work that is not notifiable (like-for-like replacements, cosmetic changes) can be done without notification. Notifiable work done without approval is technically illegal and can cause problems when selling the property. Electrical work in most rooms requires a Part P competent person or Building Control inspection. Gas work must always be performed by a
