Suspended Ceiling Grid & Tile Calculator
Calculate the materials needed for a suspended grid ceiling: tiles, main runners, cross tees (tegular and lay-in), and wall angle for any room size.
Suspended Ceiling Guide
Grid Layout Principles
A suspended grid ceiling uses main runners (long sections parallel to the shorter room dimension) supported by wires from the structural ceiling, with cross tees spanning between runners. Main runners: typically 1.2m or 2.4m lengths, spaced at tile width intervals (600mm or 610mm centres). Cross tees: span between main runners at tile length intervals. The perimeter is finished with wall angle. Border tiles at the perimeter should be at least half a tile width for aesthetics — plan the layout to
Suspension Height and Plenum
Drop below existing ceiling: minimum 100-150mm for standard grid. 200-300mm typically allows easy access for above-ceiling services (cables, pipes, ventilation). The space above the suspended ceiling (plenum) must be accessible for maintenance. Hanger wire: mild steel wire (or threaded rod for heavy loads) at 1.2m centres along main runners. Attach to concrete ceiling with anchor bolts or rawl plugs (25kg working load each). Plasterboard ceiling: use toggle bolts or direct fixings into joists. M
Tiles — Acoustic and Decorative
Standard mineral fibre tiles (Armstrong, Rockfon, Ecophon): most common. Good acoustic absorption (NRC 0.55-0.85). Fire rated. Available in plain white or textured finishes. Acoustic ratings: NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) 0.0-1.0 — higher = more sound absorbed. Class A NRC: 0.70+. Open plan offices typically need NRC 0.70+ to control reverb time. For home use: standard plain tiles usually sufficient. Moisture-resistant tiles: required in bathrooms, kitchens, and areas with high humidity — st
Planning Services and Lighting
Plan the grid layout around light fitting positions before installing — standard suspended ceiling lights fit into grid modules (600×600mm cut-out). Recessed LED panels: 595×595mm (fits 600×600 grid) or 595×1195mm. Service integration: air supply and extract grilles are available in grid module sizes. Consider cable runs and conduit above the grid before closing up. Fire stopping: where the grid crosses fire compartment walls, fire-rated tiles and perimeter details are required. Building regulat
