Pressure Explained

The Pressure Formula

Pressure (Pa) = Force (N) ÷ Area (m²). A 70kg person standing on one foot (area ≈ 0.015 m²) exerts approximately 45,800 Pa = 0.45 bar = 6.6 PSI. The same person on a bed of nails (1000 nails, total area ≈ 0.1 m²) exerts just 6,870 Pa — distributed over more area.

Common Pressure Units

1 atm = 101,325 Pa = 1.01325 bar = 14.696 PSI = 760 mmHg. Tyre pressure: 2–2.5 bar (30–36 PSI). Blood pressure: measured in mmHg (normal = 120/80 mmHg). Atmospheric pressure at sea level: 1013 mbar.

Everyday Applications

Tyre pressure (bar/PSI). Blood pressure (mmHg). Atmospheric pressure (mbar). Boiler pressure (bar). Hydraulic systems (bar/PSI). Scuba diving depth pressure: add 1 atm per 10m of water depth.
