How Ages Are Counted
Most cultures count age from the last birthday (Western style). Korean age adds 1 at birth and 1 each January 1st regardless of birthday — so a baby born in December is already 2 in January under the traditional system. South Korea officially switched to Western age counting in 2023.

16: Can work full time, consent to sexual activity, marry with parental consent. 17: Can drive a car. 18: Can vote, buy alcohol, gamble, get a tattoo. 25: Car hire without surcharge at most companies. 66: State pension age (rising to 67 by 2028).
