The Typical UK WFH Saving

Research from Forbes (Sept 2024) found UK office workers save an average of £69 per week when working from home — roughly £3,600 per year over 52 weeks. This breaks down approximately: £25 a week on commuting, £30 on food and drink, £8 on workwear/dry cleaning, with about £6 absorbed by additional household costs (electricity, heating, broadband). The net £69 weekly figure assumes 5 WFH days; for hybrid workers doing 2-3 days, it's proportionately lower.

The £6/Week Tax Relief

If you HAVE to work from home (your employer requires it, or you have no permanent office), you can claim £6/week tax relief through HMRC. For a basic-rate taxpayer that's £1.20/week tax back, or £62.40/year. Higher-rate taxpayers receive £2.40/week (£124.80/year). Apply once via GOV.UK and your tax code updates. Note: since 2022, HMRC has tightened eligibility — voluntary hybrid working alone doesn't qualify. You must show your employer has no office available or requires home working.

Where The Costs Hide

Many WFH workers underestimate the additional costs. A typical UK home with someone WFH 5 days a week sees: electricity up by £180-300/year (laptop, monitor, lights, kettle, coffee machine). Gas/heating up by £200-450/year in heated months (you're home 8-10 hours more per day). Broadband often upgraded by £8-15/month for video-call reliability. Office furniture (chair £150-400, desk £100-300, monitor £150+, decent webcam, mic, lighting). Most of these are tax-deductible if your employer requires

The Real Trade-Off Isn't Money

Calculating only the money misses the largest WFH effects. A 60-minute round-trip commuter who switches to WFH 3 days a week reclaims 3 hours/week — over 150 hours a year, equivalent to nearly a full week's holiday. Studies consistently show hybrid workers report higher job satisfaction, better sleep, more exercise, and improved family relationships. Employers benefit too — Stanford research found hybrid workers are 13% more productive on average. The financial calculator is a useful tool, but t
